Why kids join gangs and how to keep them from joining


Everyone has their different reason for doing things but many kids join gang for a few of the same reasons.

  • The are seeking to gain a sense of security, protection, or belonging. Most times when these needs are not being met at home they will seek other sources to fulfill these needs. 
  •  Environment. Many see it as "family business" because many will have siblings or parents that are also in gangs and they think it is just their path in life to follow. 
  •  Many kids see it as a financial opportunity.
  •  They seek a sense of power, status, or respect
  • Many are peer pressured into joining gangs for many reasons 



There are many more reasons as to why kids joins gangs and there are many ways to keep kids from joining in on such dangerous activities.

  • Create an open relationship with your children, students, or neighbors. So that they can come to you and not feel scared or embarrassed
  • Encourage them to get involved in after school activities like sports, theatre, or debate.
  • Don't let them stay out late and make sure you know where they are going and who they are going with. 
  • Make sure to be involved in their live by helping with homework or attending sporting events that they are playing in. 





Warning signs of gang activity

There are many possibly warning signs that as members of the community we can look out for.
Some being:

  • Admits membership
  • „ Change of behavior or defiant behavior
  • „ Grades drop
  • „ New “friends”
  • „ Calls from unknown people
  • „ Unexplained money and jewelry
  • „ Slang
  • „ Obsession with certain colors and sports teams apparel
  • „ Flashing signs
  • „ Graffiti on books and walls
  • „ Nicknames and street names
  • „ Evidence of drug abuse
